Director of Development

Organizational Overview: Echoing Green identifies emerging social change leaders and provides them with seed capital and technical assistance to launch innovative social change organizations. Since its inception in 1987, Echoing Green has been the primary provider of first-stage funding and strategic support for social entrepreneurs. Through its signature fellowship program, Echoing Green has distributed $27 million in seed capital to over 450 visionary leaders who have created about 370 new organizations in forty U.S. states and thirty countries.

Position Overview: Working closely with and reporting to the Vice President of Development, the Director of Development will supervise corporate partnerships and individual donor events that contribute to Echoing Green’s ambitious $4.4M development goal, a 7% increase over last year’s goal. A new position created due to organizational growth, the Direct of Development will strengthen internal fundraising systems and lead the small development team in deepening current relationships and spawning new ones through more rigorous prospecting, cultivation and stewardship activities.

Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop and implement strategies and relationship-building activities focused on the cultivation of corporate partnerships, including supporting and coordinating the involvement of senior leadership
  • Ensure the success of all new and existing donor-focused events by leading event planning efforts, leveraging local and national networks, and recruiting, inspiring, and coordinating volunteers and supporters
  • Manage, support and coordinate development team of two development associates and external consultants as appropriate to maximize involvement and impact
  • Manage the functions of the development department, designing and driving action plans set to achieve strong annual fundraising goals and designing and fortifying fundraising systems and processes
  • Assist in preparing budgets and forecasts and in setting and tracking goals related to all fundraising activities
  • Support the VP of Development and senior leadership to align fundraising efforts with Echoing Green’s overall strategic plan and organizational goals

Qualifications:

  • At least 4 years of experience managing development functions in an entrepreneurial nonprofit environment
  • Demonstrated success developing and cultivating corporate relationships; knowledge of the New York philanthropic community preferred
  • Strong management skills, with the ability to mentor, coach, and supervise development professionals early in their careers
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail
  • A professional and resourceful style with the ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative and manage multiple tasks and projects at a time
  • High energy, goal-oriented, and driven, with an entrepreneurial approach to fund raising and problem-solving
  • Commitment to and passion for the mission of Echoing Green
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and development databases
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; advanced degree preferred

Recruitment Associate

Echoing Green is seeking a Recruitment Associate to manage and improve the search and selection process for our fellowship program. The Recruitment Associate will report to the Vice President of Fellow and Alumni Programs. This is a position that offers a great deal of autonomy, responsibility, and learning opportunities in a friendly and supportive environment.

Primary Responsibilities
Marketing: Echoing Green receives an average of 1,000 applications per year for our fellowship program. The Recruitment Associate is responsible for promoting this opportunity to emerging social entrepreneurs all around the world via outreach to potential recommenders, public service networks, and digital media. In addition, the Recruitment Associate is responsible for representing Echoing Green to prospective candidates, answering questions, and developing tools to help applicants perform well in our selection process. Key goals include increasing the quality and diversity of our candidate pool.
Application System Management: Echoing Green accepts fellowship submissions through an online application system. The Recruitment Associate manages this system by responding to bug reports and working with our development firm to implement new features. Key goals include enhancing the user experience and making the application process more effective at filtering candidates.
Application Evaluation: Echoing Green relies on a team of 300 volunteer experts to review applications each year. The Recruitment Associate recruits these volunteers, assigns each applications based on their expertise, and collects scoring information. In addition, they read hundreds of applications on their own and help Echoing Green select our finalists. Key goals include aligning the evaluation process with our selection criteria, providing a positive volunteer experience, and carefully selecting the strongest candidates.
Event Planning: Echoing Green selects its new fellows by bringing finalists to New York for interviews each May. The Recruitment Associate is responsible for all aspects of planning and executing this finalist selection event. This includes but is not limited to researching venues, planning logistics, and developing event programming. Key goals include providing a comfortable experience for our finalists and judges and keeping costs in line with budgetary expectations.
Culture of Innovation: Echoing Green strongly believes in continuously improving the work we do. The Recruitment Associate is an active participant in assessing, brainstorming and improving the work of the Fellowship and Alumni Programs team.

Qualifications:
• BA, BS or equivalent required. 2+ years of work experience preferred.
• Nonprofit/social enterprise experience or interest
• Commitment to social justice and transformative social change work
• Strong interpersonal and organizational skills – detail orientation is a must!
• Excellent written and oral communication skills
• Deep technology expertise – particularly with spreadsheets, web applications, and databases. Love of data a plus!

Fellowship Program Associate

Echoing Green is seeking a Fellowship Program Associate to support and advise a portfolio of fellow organizations, manage programs and processes associated with our fellow and alumni programs as well as take the lead on planning and executing fellow gatherings. The Fellowship Program Associate will report to the Vice President of Fellow and Alumni Programs. This is a position that offers a great deal of autonomy, responsibility, and learning opportunities in a friendly and supportive environment.

Primary Responsibilities
Organizational/Business Development Support: Echoing Green supports the development of about 40 organizations. The Fellowship Program Associate is responsible for providing coaching, resources and support around the development of organizational infrastructure and professional leadership for a portion of the currently funded organizations/businesses.
Event Planning: Echoing Green hosts two major fellow gatherings each year. The Fellowship Program Associate is responsible for all aspects of planning and executing at least one such event each year. This includes but is not limited to researching venues, logistics planning, developing management and leadership workshops, designing networking opportunities for participants and recruiting volunteer presenters.
Content Development: Echoing Green is interested in developing materials/articles for our community of fellows based on the experiences of our alumni. The Fellowship Program Associate will be tasked with creating worksheets, articles, etc. based on the interventions with fellows and alumni around their organizational or personal development needs.
Fellow Selection: Echoing Green receives an average of 1000 application each year. The Fellowship Program Associate takes an active role in evaluating candidates and supporting the selection process.

Development Associate

Echoing Green, a leading global social venture fund that provides seed funding to emerging social entrepreneurs, seeks a Development Associate. The candidate will fill one of two Development Associate positions at Echoing Green, and will be responsible for supporting the revenue goal generated from individual donors, foundations and corporations. Reporting to the Director of Development, the person will be an integral member of Echoing Green’s team, and will also support the Board of Directors to systematically and effectively build the organization’s overall fundraising efforts. Four positions comprise the development team, responsible for raising an increased budget of 10% percent ($4.6m) this fiscal year.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Provide administrative support to the Director of Development and VP of Development

2. Maintain scheduling, development database, income tracking system and gift acknowledgement process

3. Oversee special projects and annual fund mailings

4. Do prospect research on individuals and foundations

5. Draft and edit grants; track proposals and reports

6. Manage the donor section of the website

7. Work with team to identify fundraising goals and help with quarterly reporting of progress made towards those goals (i.e., board updates and annual development plan)

8. Additional excitement: this role has opportunity for growth as we look to expand our efforts on the following fronts in the next 18 months: gala, alumni program, and corporate partnerships.

Additional Skills:

• A college degree

• A minimum of one year of development experience, two years in the nonprofit world, and a desire to excel in development.

• Excellent interpersonal and team building skills

• Passion for Echoing Green’s mission and the ability to translate that passion into action

• Excellent communication skills as an articulate spokesperson for organization and programs (both written and verbal)

• High energy, goal-directed, driven, relationship-builder

Content Development Consultant

Echoing Green is seeking a Content Development Consultant to develop organizational management tools based on the experiences of fellows in our community. This is a position that offers a great deal of autonomy, responsibility, and learning opportunities in a friendly and supportive environment.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Gathering Data: Echoing Green is interested in developing materials/articles for our community of fellows based on the experiences of our alumni. The Content Development Consultant will be tasked with creating interviewing fellows/alumni and synthesizing their experiences into content to be utilized by others in the community.
  • Developing Tools: The Content Development Consultant will also develop self-help tools based on her/his own management/social entrepreneurial experiences and the experiences of other experts in our community. Echoing Green staff will utilize these tools to support social entrepreneurs within our community.
  • Editing Fellow Submissions: Echoing Green Fellows submit narratives of their organizational development successes bi-monthly. The Content Development Consultant will follow-up with fellows to clarify and edit their submissions into best practices that other community members can benefit from.

Qualifications:

  • BA, BS or equivalent required. MBA, MA or 5+ years of management experience preferred
  • Nonprofit management/social entrepreneurship/social enterprise experience required
  • Creative problem solving, flexibility and entrepreneurial spirit required

This is a part-time, 1-year contracted position beginning in July/August 2008, with opportunities for continuation. The position reports to the Vice President of Fellow and Alumni Programs. Successful candidates will have the ability to work from home. Hours worked per week are flexible but we estimate this position will require about 10-25 hours per week.
