Shira Husbands-Hankin has been involved in grassroots social change work for over seven years. Originally from the Pacific Northwest, she began her activism in Eugene, Oregon where she served on the coordinating committee of Youth for Justice, a multi-issue youth-led organization. Additionally, Shira was a founding member of her high school’s Gay-Straight Alliance. She has continued to be active on issues including immigrants’ rights, electoral organizing, and anti-bigotry campaigns. In 2006 she received her B.A. from Portland State University, majoring in Liberal Studies with a concentration in Multimedia Communications. Shira previously served as Booking Manager for the political theater group Act for Action as well as an administrative assistant at a law firm in Portland, Oregon. In June 2007, she relocated to New York City.

The saying "if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem" was one of the things that stuck with me most from my work with an organization called Youth for Justice. While working there I really saw what a privilege it is to have the opportunity to be educated about social justice issues, and I believe that with knowledge and education comes the responsibility to take action where problems exist.
The opportunity to play a role in supporting cutting edge work for social change around the world.
