2001 Echoing Green Fellow Dr. Michael Bengwayan Wins World Bank Award

Congratulations to 2001 Echoing Green Fellow Dr. Michael Bengwayan! Last week, Michael’s organization, Pine Tree, won the World Bank Ecological Award. The award, worth one million pesos, has been presented to Pine Tree to prevent further dengue infestation in La Trinidad, Benguet, in the Philippines. The organization plans to use these funds to study the production of dengue’s natural enemies and mosquito plant repellants.

Every two years, the World Bank calls for submissions from government and non-government agencies; the focus is finding an innovative project that fosters community development in the fields of environment, livelihood and good governance. This year, more than 500 agencies applied, ninety-nine made it to the finals and only thirty-one were awarded. Our congratulations go to Michael and everyone at Pine Tree!

Congratulations !

Kudos to Michael and his group! He is a good friend, and my housemate in Ireland while we were studying. I had the chance to visit him in the Philippines and their work is imppressive.

Michael,keep it up!

PINE TREE, Way to Go!

I was PINE TREE project manager for five years from 2000 to 2004 before I migrated to Canada with my family. I am very happy for PINE TREE and feel I am with them still. Michael is a worker and his attitude is infectious--he always says there is no defeat but merely a rest and that it is in defeat where we are at our best.

Congratulations to PINE TREE

I wish to commend Michael and his group PINE TREE.I had the chance to work with them briefly and they take their work very passionately.

Michael and PINE TREE

I have heard of Michael's group PINE TREE working on a biofuel in Luzon, Philipines as well as his promotion of nitrogen fixing trees. Your information is another heartening news. In the Philippines, deforestation and increase of vector-related diseases like dengue are alarming. Small efforts such as these if done by many people can collectively have a strong global impact.
