Founder of ICT for Agri Pvt. Ltd.
2018 Climate Fellow
ICT For Agri (IFA) provides precise and localized information on climate-smart crop advisory, input suppliers, weather forecast, and market price through an SMS and mobile platform called Krishi Guru. The IFA platform connects farmers in Nepal to their local extension agencies, input suppliers, market traders, and agricultural experts. The overall goal is to improve the livelihood of smallholder farmers by equipping them with technology and knowledge to improve yields, provide profitable markets, manage risks, and achieve a more sustainable, food-secure future.
Sibjan Chaulagain, managing director of ICT for Agri Pvt Ltd., founded the company in 2014 after spending two years as a computer teacher and a farmer in his rural village after his graduation. The need in his own village to combat pest and disease, and increase yield, motivated Sibjan to develop a mobile-based platform to help rural farmers. He received awards at the Ncell App Camp, the ReConnect Challenge, and the IEEE Presidents’ Change the World Competition, and he received the ICT for Mountain Development Award for Excellence in Engineering and the World Summit Youth Award. Sibjan was selected as one of eight social entrepreneurs to attend the Social Entrepreneurship Forum in Stockholm in 2016. He also won the $50,000 Data Driven Farming Prize, organized by USAID and NestaPrize, and was nominated by the U.S. Embassy in Nepal to participate in the 2017 Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES). He has been featured in numerous national newspapers in Nepal for his contribution to the agriculture sector.
