Remembering 2002 Fellow Ian Marvy

It’s with heavy hearts that we share that 2002 Fellow Ian Marvy, a beloved member of the Echoing Green community, passed away recently after a courageous battle with cancer. As the co-founder of Red Hook Farms—a youth-centered agriculture and food justice program in Brooklyn—Ian used urban agriculture to nurture new generations of leaders and grow stronger, healthier communities.

Ian epitomized the passion, dedication, and innovative spirit that Echoing Green looks for in our Fellows. He generously shared all of this with our community, including at our 2023 All Fellows Convening in Minneapolis. As devastated as we are by his passing, we’re buoyed by the fact that his legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched and the inspiring vision he held for a better world.

“Ian’s spirit lit up rooms and gardens and communities,” 1998 Fellow Michele Kotler noted. “He had beautiful visions of what the world could be. I was in awe of how he took an asphalt lot and made it bloom and provide sustenance.”

More information about how you can honor Ian is available on the CaringBridge page maintained by his loved ones.
